Update vs Upgrade -- what's the difference?

Update

An update is a minor change within the same major version (e.g., 13.1 to 13.1.3).
Updates fix bugs, improve stability, or add small improvements.
Updates are free if you own the current major version.

ProfiCAD checks for updates automatically at every launch. If one is available, you'll be prompted to install it. This automatic check never performs an upgrade, because not every user wants one right away. Reasons include:

  • The upgrade is paid, and the user wants to wait
  • The current version does everything they need
  • They want to stay compatible with colleagues
  • They haven't seen a compelling reason to switch yet
  • They plan to upgrade later
That's why upgrading is always a manual step -- you download and install the new version yourself.

Upgrade

An upgrade is a jump to a new major version (e.g., version 12 to 13).
Upgrades bring significant changes -- new features, redesigned interface, and more.
Upgrades are paid because they include major improvements.
