How to upgrade to a new version

A new major version of ProfiCAD has been released (e.g. 13 → 14) and you are considering the move? The procedure is designed so that you risk nothing: you try the new version first and only then decide whether to buy it.

An upgrade is always installed manually. The Help → Check for updates command will not do it – it only installs free updates within your current version. The difference is explained on the Update vs Upgrade page.

Step by step

  1. Back up your drawings, symbols and the program itself. Make a complete backup before any change of version – the Backing up page explains how. In addition, copy the whole folder where ProfiCAD is installed (C:\Program Files\ProfiCAD for ProfiCAD 14 and later, C:\Program Files (x86)\ProfiCAD for version 13 and earlier) to a safe place. This lets you return at any time to exactly the version you are using today.
  2. Download and install the new version from the Download page. The new version replaces the current one.
  3. Check whether the new version suits you. Open your drawings, go through your usual workflows and read the what's new overview. Take your time – you only pay after you have tested it.
  4. Do you want to keep the new version? Enter your existing license key into it – the program will display a discount code. Then go to the Pricing page, choose the license type, click Order and enter the discount code in the order form. Would you rather order before installing? E-mail us at info@proficad.com and we will send you the code. After payment you will receive a new license key – enter it as described on the Activation page.
  5. Does the new version not suit you? Uninstall it and copy the program folder backed up in step 1 back to its original location. You get exactly the version you were using, including its activation. Restore your drawings from the backup. Your existing license remains valid.

What does the upgrade cost

  • Owners of an earlier version get a 50% discount off the license price.
  • If you paid for your license within the 6 months before the new version was released, the upgrade is free.
  • Upgrading is not mandatory. Your current version keeps working, but no longer receives updates.

💡 Pro-tip: Drawings saved in the new version may not open in an older one. Before you start testing the new version on real projects, make sure the backup from step 1 is really done.
