Running ProfiCAD on Mac

Introduction

ProfiCAD is a Windows application, but Mac users can run it through a virtual machine or a compatibility layer. This guide covers two approaches: Parallels Desktop (easy, paid) and WineHQ (free, requires technical skill).

Option 1: Parallels Desktop

What is Parallels Desktop?

Parallels Desktop is virtualization software that lets you run Windows and Windows apps on your Mac. It's a paid product, but a 30-day free trial is available.

Steps:

  1. Install Parallels Desktop: Download it from the official Parallels website and follow the installation instructions. You can evaluate it free for 30 days.

  2. Install Windows: Launch Parallels Desktop, go to File - New, and follow the on-screen instructions. Parallels includes a Windows copy that you can activate later.

  3. Install ProfiCAD: Inside the Windows virtual machine, visit the ProfiCAD website, download the installer, and run it.

  4. Run ProfiCAD: Once installed, you can use ProfiCAD on your Mac through the virtual machine.

Cost

Parallels Desktop starts at around $80 for a standard license. The 30-day trial lets you evaluate it risk-free.

Option 2: WineHQ

What is WineHQ?

WineHQ is a free, open-source compatibility layer that runs Windows applications on Unix-like systems, including macOS. It's best suited for technically experienced users.

Steps:

  1. Install WineHQ: Go to the WineHQ website, navigate to the download section, select macOS, and follow the instructions.

  2. Install ProfiCAD: Download the ProfiCAD installer from the official website. Open Terminal, navigate to the directory containing the installer, type wine setup.exe (replace "setup.exe" with the actual installer name), and press Enter.

  3. Run ProfiCAD: After installation, navigate to the installation directory in Terminal and run wine proficad.exe (replace "proficad.exe" with the actual executable name).

Cost

WineHQ is completely free.

Which option should you choose?

Parallels Desktop is the easier, more reliable option -- it works out of the box with a 30-day trial. WineHQ is free but requires more technical know-how. Pick whichever fits your needs and skill level.
